Why Shopify is the preferred choice as your e-commerce platform
On this page I will tell you about Shopify and my reasoned opinion why Shopify is the most effective and preferred choice for your webstore implementation.
Please find below ten reasons. The reasons are in numerical order, but not necessarily in order of importance, as different merchants will have different needs.
This site is also powered by Shopify.
What is Shopify?Shopify is one of the world's most popular and fastest growing e-commerce platforms. It allows a merchant to create a website to showcase its product range and receive orders and payments.
Shopify is a Canadian listed company. There are over 500,000 merchants worldwide using the Shopify system. Over USD 46 billion in sales has flown through Shopify stores.
Shopify is offered as a cloud service. This means that as a merchant you do not have to install your own servers and software, nor do you need to care about servicing or maintaining such systems. The cloud service comes with a monthly subscription fee. You can see Shopify's available subscription plans here.
Reason 1: FunctionalityWith Shopify, you can manage your entire online store easily through a web browser or smartphone. The management dashboard is easy to use, and you can easily add and edit products, text pages, and blogs directly with graphical editing tools.
You can sell either to consumers (B2C) or businesses (B2B). You can sell physical products just as well as intangible digital products. Your sales can be tax-free or non-taxable. Your sales may be directed to EU countries or outside the EU.
You have all the tools you need for running a webstore:
- text pages
- product pages and product catalog
- shopping cart
- different payment methods: credit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, invoices, etc.
- order management and customer returns
- printing of shipping documents
- user analytics and real-time traffic monitoring
- sales reports for accounting
- .. and much more. For additional features, there is an app store as well as extensive API interfaces. If necessary, you can also receive orders and payments physically at the point of sale.
Shopify can also connect with third-party services, so you can send your shipment information directly to your preferred delivery company and new newsletter subscribers directly to your email marketing tool.
Reason 2: Scalability and Data SecurityWith Shopify you can create as many text pages and products as you want, and you have as much disk space as you ever need. The shop's theme can be edited as much as you like. In one of the Shopify stores I have managed, we have uploaded more than 200,000 products and had thousands of customers browsing the store simultaneously without clutter.
Shopify stores always work with an encrypted HTTPS (SSL) connection, and the access to the management dashboard is protected with two-factor authentication. You can restrict your employees' access to the dashboard and customer records. Credit card payments are processed in accordance with PCI DSS standard, and the store will automatically warn you of any suspicious transactions.
Shopify and their hosting team are responsible for ensuring that the service is available, up-to-date and protected from hackers 24/7, allowing you to focus on your core business - selling.
Reason 3: You do not need your own developers or administratorsShopify is at your disposal for a monthly fee, and you can maintain your site easily yourself.
Savings compared to other systems are noticeable because you do not need to keep your own developers or server admins.
Shopify's well-structured documentation and active discussion forums provide a solution to most common questions so you can study and make changes to the site yourself as much as you like. If at some point you need some help in adding an extension or a special feature, Shopworks is there for you.
Reason 4: Directly compatible with Google and FacebookCustomers are looking for products with Google when they are in the market. They can only buy from you if they can find your shop.
Shopify builds the site and product catalog so that it can be found and indexed by Google's search engine. This means that the page elements have been properly tagged and your search visibility works correctly from day one.
- This means that if your pages have high-quality content, such as products that customers search on Google, your pages will get good scores from Google.
The use of Shopify by itself does not of course automatically move your business to the top of search results, but you can be sure that the foundations are in place and you can concentrate on delivering high-quality content. Search engine optimization and the creation of relevant content is a continuous job that must be taken care of also after the launch of the online store.
Similarly, Facebook and other social media services understand the contents of the Shopify pages and are able to display it correctly when sharing and marketing content.
Reason 5: Quick deploymentAs the system is offered as a cloud service, time and money are not spent on setting up software, data centers and Internet connectivity.
First we define basic business information such as company name, address, and phone number. Next, we define the basic settings, such as currency, units of measurement and language.
For graphic implementation, Shopify offers 10 free layouts ("themes"), and a large number of paid themes to choose from. The theme you choose can be customized as much as you like to make it look like your own brand.
Products can be defined either manually using your browser or they can be uploaded as a custom csv file to the service.
Reason 6: Predictability of operating expensesUsing Shopify costs $ 29 a month (the most affordable plan). Additionally, transaction fees are charged for each purchase made by your customers (0.5 - 2% + fees of the payment processor). You can see the Shopify price list here.
Transaction costs may sound high at first, but you only pay them when you are getting sales. And as your sales volume grows, the costs also decrease.
Extra costs may come from extensions that can be purchased as needed from Shopify's app store. These are typically a few dollars a month. Shopworks is there for you whenever you need help with any extensions.
Shopify is certainly not free. But if you compare the price of getting your own server farm, developers and server administrators, you'll see very quickly that the Shopify subscription price is very economical.
It is also important for all companies that the actual cost of the system is known and predictable. With Shopify you know exactly what it will cost you.
Reason 7: Extent of EcosystemWith the huge popularity of Shopify, you have a large number of third party resources available: apps, themes, and active discussion forums to quickly find answers to your questions.
All the resources sold in the Shopify App Store and in the themed shop are also verified by Shopify and you can see other merchant's reviews. Many of the resources are also free of charge for a trial period.
Reason 8: Works beautifully on mobile devices ("Responsive design")Shopify has also invested much in visual appearance. Themes, including the free ones, are fine and every detail is polished. This makes Shopify web stores stand out from the crowd.
Nowadays, more and more customers will browse your shop on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. If the site does not work nicely on mobile, users will split and even the Google search engine will punish your site with a poor rating.
Sites running on Shopify will work automatically on all devices, and there's no need to build different sites for desktop and mobile. The themes are built with responsive design, which means that the different sections of the page align nicely on any screen and the site is easy to navigate.
Pages, shopping cart, ordering, and payment work as well on mobile as on the big screen, maximizing your chances of doing business 24/7.
Reason 9: Have your home page on the same platformWith Shopify's tools, it's really easy to run a business. But few people know that Shopify is also a handy and powerful content management tool for maintaining text pages and blogs.
You have a graphical editor where you can create and edit text pages and news articles, and you can schedule their publication. The navigation menus of the site are simple to manage so you can easily add new content in them.
You'll also save money when you can give up your existing home page hosting environment and content management system and move it all to Shopify.
Reason 10: You can get your data out any timeYou want to change to another e-commerce platform for some reason? No problem. You can export all customers, orders and product information as csv tables or through the API. This allows you to migrate your shop to another environment.
You pay Shopify a monthly fee as long as you use it. And if you decide to switch to another system, Shopify's billing will cease at the end of that month. Fair play, isn't it?
